This car has been resting in a barn for over 35 years and is in truly remarkable, untouched condition, covering a mere 6,230 miles from new. Sold new December 2, 1955 to Paul Pfohl, NY, and still owned by his son. This is one of only 4 D Types painted black from the factory. Paul Pfohl is best known as a motorcycle racer before the war and went on to become one of the few people to race the Manx Norton successfully in the US. He achieved a string of 27 wins before moving into British cars. He acquired the D Type as well as one of the 2 Allard J2X that ran in the 1952 LeMans 24 hour race. Paul raced the D Type at various places including Riverside, Watkins Glen and Lake Erie Race in Dunkirk, NY where he was awarded 1st place. He also competed in several hillclimbs such as the Holland Park Hill climb, NY, where Paul finished 1st 2 years and 2nd one year. The car was used very little until 1967 when it was taken off the road and stored in a barn. It has remained there in its untouched condition. It has only recently been removed to be put in a storage facility because of a forest fire threat in the area. This is a rare opportunity to purchase the most unmolested, one family owned D Type in the world and the most unique D Type to be offered since the highly publicized sale of the 1956 LeMans winner in 1999.

I personally know this car. I remember moving it into storage from the barn during the forest fire. I had the pleasure of knowing Paul as well. He was a true car guy. I swear that motor oil and hi test fuel flowed through his vains. His son Bill sold the car to a collector from europe who paid over two mil for it, then had the car completely restored by the Jaguar factory at a cost of over another million. This car prior to that was original. Original paint, interior, and mechanicals. It was at the time the lowest mileage and most original D type on the planet. There had been rumors floating around that this car had been repainted BRG while Paul owned it, thiswas untrue and pure speculation. Less then 2 dozen of us knew of the current existance of the car and less then that knew its actual location. The vehicle was kept in a barn in Southern Oregon in Josephine county until the fire. The car is not hidden in a private collection by a very powerful and wealthy collector. The picture of Paul sitting in the car above was always proudly displayed in the family home. Paul was the last person to drive this car prior to it sale. Paul's son bill purchased another D type after the sale. The vehicle purchased was put together using the engine of a wrecked car with race history and another car. That car is used in some vintage track events, the last to my knowledge was in Arizona.

As TCR writes, the car was never repainted green. It is still the original black. After it was sold to European collector, the original seat covers and head rest cover were removed and saved and new ones installed, and the car was mechanically redone as necessary to be running again by a D-type expert in UK, but all original finishes were untouched when possible. The small dent in the front mouth area was fixed and paint around there and some spots on rear of car were touched up. Current mileage is 6,382.
