The car is mentioned in the book "Jaguar D Type & XKSS" by Graham Robson as one of "works team cars '56 "XKD601-XKD606. All with full width appendix C screens and anti roll bar. All these cars are mechanically similar to '55 works car, some had fuel injection. XKD603 and 606 sold to Ecurie Ecosse for '57 to be semi works team cars along with '55, XKD504.

XKD601, with fuel-injection engine, was entered in the 1956 Sebring 12 Hours by the factory, but painted white/blue stripes and run alongside the other three Cunningham D-Types. Hawthorn /Titterington #8 finished fourth. Returned to the UK after that and re-painted BRG.

I spotted an example of a D-Type at a Cars and Coffee event in Brisbane, in the state of Queensland, Australia. It is curiously registered as a 1958 model carrying chassis number "XKD601R" and painted blue, with solid white circles in places where a racing number would normally be positioned. Is it possible that XKD601 made its way Down Under and was repainted to blue and white at some point in its life. The other alternative I have is that it is actually a replica either built in 1958, or built more recently on a custom chassis from 1958 and the person at the Department of Transport just registered it as a Jaguar D-Type instead of a "Custom-Built Specially-Constructed Roadster" which is what replicas are normally road-registered as.
