  • Original Distributor was added: Jaguar SA
  • Original Owner City was added: Havana
  • Original Owner Country was added: Cuba
  • Car History

Supplied to Distribuidora Jaguar SA, Havana, Cuba; sold to Alfonso Gcmez Mena; 1956 Sebring 12 Hours, with Santiago Gonzales, 8th; later crashed into house damaging car very extensively; quoted £2000 by Momo to rebuild; decided to purchase XKD 503 rather than have car rebuilt; 1975 car purporting to be XKD 521 advertised in Autosport by a 'Mr Herberts' of New York, believed to be Mr Herb Wetson who dealt in a number of D-types in the 1970s and was reported as having spare chassis XKD 523 & XKD 536; it has been suggested that the chassis plate may have been transferred by Mena to XKD S03, and thus that it was this car being advertised; 1991 car bearing this number advertised in Los Angeles; it has also been reported that the chassis plate was affixed to Lynx replica L87/32.

The British Racing Green, chassis XKD521 Jaguar D-Type was delivered to Jaguar SA in Cuba and sold to Sr. Alfonso Gomez Mena.

Entered and raced at the 1956 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring by Sr. Gomez Mena along with his co-driver, Sr. Santiago Gonzales. The two ran a strong race, starting from the front third of a field of 59 entrants. They ran as high as 11th overall up to the ninth hour of the race. In the tenth hour, they moved into 10th spot and in the eleventh hour, after pitting for fuel, they took the field in 8th, where the stayed until race end.

In 1994, Tom Mittler purchased the car from Symbolic Motor Car Company and has participated in races beginning in 1995 through the present, at Moroso, Mid-Ohio, Sebring, Road America, and Carolina Motorsports Park.

This car, together with XKSS 766 and XKSS 725 was brought back to the UK by Colin Crabbe around 1987. He had all three resored at Bourne (the old BRM works) according to Jaguar Quarterly Vol 4:#1 (Autumn 1991). There would seem to be some possibility of cloning if previous entries relating to a Los Angeles car advert with this number are correct?

I have done a great deal of research into this car and Alfonso-Gomez-Mena its original owner and racer. It only completed into two events and destroyed in its second which was in Caracas. I have an image of the car showing it wrecked - yet just a few weeks later Gomez-Mena was racing a D-Type again. He sent XKD521 to Alfred Momo and Briggs Cunningham's Jaguar business in Queens, New York but it was more expensive to repair than it was worth. I have concluded GM bought Brigg's XKD525 and replaced XKD521 with it. GM then destroyed his new D-Type in a road race between Havana and Pinar del Rio (I also have images). He hit a masonry building which acted as a school and killed a number of spectators including the school teacher. He then sent that one back to Momo and purchased XKD503 from Cunningham, and which he raced at Sebring and the Cuba GP in 1957. GM then moved onto Ferraris.

XKD503 went back to Momo and was raced again, but not entered as XKD503 or by Cunningham/Momo. Images again prove that beyond doubt. I believe 521 was rebuilt and raced by the Cunningham team, but 525 scrapped for parts.

I should have added that I believe both 521 and 252 were reduced to parts for resale or reuse in Momo's customer D-Types they prepared, and also to repair the three team cars that were all rolled on a single weekend - all works built Long Nose cars! They were XKD506, 507 (Cunningham's car) and 508. 506 and 508 were scrapped by Jaguar when they were sent back.

Saw this car XKD521, in Colorado last week on a run over independence pass where the car was badly damaged when the driver passed on a blind corner and struck a Ford Expedition. The car caught on fire and was put out quickly. Fortunately no one was injured even though the whole left side was damaged. The owner stated that the car would be rebuilt.
