Sellers description:
A significant competition Jaguar D-Type with great period Le Mans history and continuous ownership records from new.
Records show that the car was re-bodied with a Michelotti body. It appears that the Michelotti body was once on XKD 513 chassis but was removed and XKD 513 was put back to original specs. 3 pictures (red car) are posted from this listing. The blue car is from the above seller.

"Mary"
Death date: 21.Jun.1958
Circuit: Le Mans
Race: 24 Heures du Mans
Vehicle brand/model: Jaguar D-Type #XKD 513
Note:
At Saturday dawn, "Mary"'s Jaguar D-Type collided with Bruce Kessler's Ferrari at Dunlop Curve and overturned; "Mary" was killed on the spot, and Kessler sustained extensive burns.
Several web sources indicate "Mary"'s real name as Jean-Marie Brousselet, but, according to Jaguar's registers it was instead Jean-Marie Brussin. He was an industrialist from Lyon who had purchased his Jaguar D-Type, chassis #XKD 513, engine #E.2022.9, from the Peignaux garage in Lyon, Jaguar specialist. He had entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans with André Guelfi as team mate.
The 1958 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was marred by a number of crashes. Appalling weather conditions and an even larger percentage of "first-time" drivers were the causes of the accidents, many of them were caused through poor visibility, other were due to cars arriving on the scene of an accident before any warning could be given, some were due to baulking by slower cars and others the result of plain carelessness. Of the 36 cars that retired during the race, 15 ended up as wrecks, some totally destroyed, others merely bent and of the drivers, after "Mary" who lost his life, other 14 were injured.

I saw the car yesterday parked in Traunkirchen in Upper Austria. The car has the same blue color as can be seen for example on the photographs by Kevin Hulsey. It was a mere pleasure standing in front of this beautiful car. A small plate inside just above the steering wheel tells about type and racing in LeMans. I was lucky to see the car with removed passenger seat cover.

Hi, where can we see, or where can we upload pictures of the Michelotti bodied version of this same car? I guess in here, I am unsure, but I think that the Michelotti body lives on with another chassis, possibly an E-type identity. It was a very unique car and very attractive IMO at the time. Cheers!

From Jaguar magazine, 11/1/16:
REMEMBERING - THE D-TYPE FATAL ACCIDENT - UNLUCKY '13'
It is largely forgotten, but the D-Type which finished third at Le Mans in 1957 was wrecked the next year at the same track when it crashed under the notoriously fast Dunlop Bridge just past the pits. That was an era when the cars ran flat out from White House Corner over one kilometre from the pits, past the unprotected pits and into a fast up hill right hand kink under the Dunlop Bridge.
Owner and driver Jean-Marie Bruin raced under the name 'Mary', and his car was part of the Los Amigos team was taken with Jean Lucas co-driving. The car was prepared by the Jaguar factory both for 1957 and 1958. Brussin crashed in atrocious weather, was flung from the car and then hit by the Kessler Ferrari. The bonnet and tail section torn off and fortunately 'Mary' remains the only Jaguar driver killed during a Le Mans race.
The wreck sat in storage until sold in 1960 when it was sold to coach builder Michelotti who cut away the damaged body panels and a very attactive coupe body was fabricated. In1963 the car was displayed at Geneva motor show. In the late 1960s it was imported into USA by Richard F. Carter (Georgia); used for display purposes, then in 1973 it was sold to Andrew Gortway in the UK. He sent it to Lynx where ther Michelotti body shell was removed and put onto E-Type parts. XKD 513 was sold to Laurence Bristow who had Lynx put a recreation body put onto it many of the original mechanical parts.
